Enjoy a full day at leisure in Queenstown. Perhaps try white water rafting, a jet boat ride or a wine tasting tour (all own expense). You could simply relax, shop or enjoy time at one the many cafés and restaurants while soaking up the alpine views

Travel along the rugged West Coast Road and over the Haast Pass. Discover the rich alpine rainforest as you journey through this historic region. Through the Gates of Haast is a lost world that’s so spectacular and remote UNESCO designated it a World Heritage area. From Haast to Jackson Bay there are empty shingle beaches, dunes, lakes and wetlands, all with the soaring backdrop of the Southern Alps making it an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. There is an abundance of wildlife so keep a careful look out for fur seals, Hectors Dolphins and Fiordland Crested Penguins. This afternoon there’s free time to explore Franz Josef township. Perhaps take a scenic flight over the magnificent Franz Josef Glacier or over Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in the southern hemisphere or a valley walk with a local glacier guide (all own expense). The magnificent Franz Josef Glacier is widely regarded as the gem of New Zealand’s West Coast glaciers. Take the opportunity to experience the most spectacular glacier environment anywhere in the world, offering a range of glacier hiking options. Tonight you’ll enjoy a special West Coast dinner at your hotel.

Breakfast at hotel. This morning continue to Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast. Here you’ll board the world-famous TranzAlpine, one of the top six train journeys in the world. It is truly one of the world’s great scenic train trips through the dramatic contrast of lush green landscapes on one side of the Alps and dry beech forests and tussock landscapes on the other. Your train departs Greymouth and climbs into the Southern Alps before descending the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. There are 19 tunnels and four viaducts, with Staircase Viaduct being 73 metres high. Dinner is at your hotel.
